Why I Chose Pottery

It started with a visit to Kendal College pottery sessions, shortly after I left University. I had never done any pottery before and after many lessons, I put together my first planter from slabs of clay rolled out and allowed to dry to leather hard. Unfortunately it was near Christmas and I never saw my finished item- someone else had taken it home!  At that low point I nearly concluded that pottery was not for me. However I continued and I am so glad I did!

The tutors at Kendal College were very supportive and I think it was the fact that people admired my work which spurred me on.  I particularly thank Karen Wilkinson for that early encouragement.

I then moved on to classes with Mike and Vicky Eden’s place near Milnthorpe. This was always great fun and I had another admirer, Bluey, the lurcher dog who, like the students, appreciated a nice biscuit at brew time!  Here I had a wonderful time and Mike and Vicky were extremely kind and helpful. I learnt a lot of the techniques used in pottery, and Mike and Vicky continue to be helpful with glaze recipes and advice, when the time came for me to set up on my own. I have been drawn to stay with earthenware (red) clay as it has good decorating potential.  I moved into my studio 8 years ago at Whinfell House Farm. I am still here today. It is a great place with plenty of space, plenty of parking and easy access (including wheelchair access).

I am called Catwalk Ceramics and I couldn’t be happier knowing that this awaits me every day.  In recent years my Mum has taken a keen interest and is making and decorating things of her own now, at 96!  Both Mum and Dad have been extremely supportive to allow me to enjoy the life of a potter. 

As the old Chinese proverb goes: It is better to travel hopefully than to arrive.

I still have a lot I want to do with my pottery.
